First, You need to understand what is STROKE, or CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident). There are 2 types: Hemorrhagic stroke (where a brain blood vessel rutpures), and Infarct (where a brain vessel occludes). In general, a Hemorrhagic Stroke has a higher mortality.
Second, you need to understand the functions of different parts of the brain. The Cerebrum, which is the 2 big hemisphere of the brain (for simplicity), is relatively unrelated to survival. It controls our thoughts, voluntary movement, somatic sensation.. etc. While the Brainstem located between our Cerebrum and Spinal cord contains the parts of our brain that governs survival.
Therefore, if a stroke involve the brainstem, mortality is high. If a stroke involves the cerebrum only, the mortality is lower. However, sometimes it is possible to have a massive stroke of cerebrum (more likely to be a hemorrhagic stroke) will cause an increase in the pressure inside the head and compresses the brainstem causing death.
The entire medical science behind the causes and effects of Stroke is complicated. Death is not the usual for stroke patients, most do not die. But the residual morbidity is as terrifying as death may imply.
