a boat heds directly EASTWARD a cross a river at 12 meters per second. if a the current in the river is flowing at 5 meters per second due SOUTH, what is the magnitude of the restultant velocity of the boat?

explain to me clearly and show all your works. please!!!!!

We can treat these two vectors individually.
The magnitude of the x component = 12 m/s
The magnitude of the y component = -5 m/s
The magnitude of the resultant velocity
By pyth. theorem
12^2+(-5)^2 = the resultant velocity
calculate yourself

By Pyth. Theorem,
√(12^2)+(5^2)
= 13ms-1

You can treat it as a simple trigonometry question.
