Exchange 同 Swap 有乜分別?

兩個字有很多相通之處, 但請留意以下幾點:

(1) exchange 只可以作 [vt] (transitive), 而 swap [vt] 及 [vi] 都可以.
e.g. When we both have finished reading our books, SHALL WE SWAP?

(2) 作為名詞, 兩個字都可解作 「交換的舉動」; 但 swap 本身更可解作「換來的東西」e.g. This comic is A SWAP that I got from my friend.

(3) exchange 比 swap 較為 formal.

(4) exchange 可轉成形容詞 (exchangeABLE), swap 則沒有.

(5) 未聽過有人說 swap rate, 只有 exchange rate

「swappable」雖然有人使用, 但請注意: 直至今天, 這字仍未列入任何字典當中 (包括由用家自定的 wiktionary 都未有人收錄, 建議 tintin 加入這一條目). 因此, 若你是一位學生, 最好不要用此字, 即使用都必須加上quotation, 免被老師 / marker 當你錯.

Exchange 是交換，兌換的意思，是一個在雙方面都同意的情況下所發生的事情。Exchange的物件可能是相同的，也可以是不同的。而swap(或change)通常是指同類型的東西在調換的時候用。

Let's change seats. Let's swap seats. (This means that one is taking the seat of the other person and vice versa.)
You should swap your old hard drive with a new one. (This means that you should take out the old hard drive and put in a new one.)
I am going to the store to exchange the defect item. (You may get an identical item, or you may get a different item.)

Swap 的形容詞是swappable.
