Light Yagami, a high school studuent, discovered a mysterious notebook, known as the ^Death Note^, that was left in the human world accidentally by a shinigami (god of death in Japanese) named Ryuk. Upon his encounter with Ryuk, Light was told that if a human^s name is written in the Death Note, that person would die. With the Death Note, Light sought to realise his dream of a crimeless world by passing his judgment on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of criminals caught the attention of the Police and a mysterious young detective known only as ^L^, who vowed to bring the person behind the serial killing to justice. Light realized that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a thrilling race to prove mental superiority between the two began.
