Twelve basketball players, whose uniforms are numbered 1 through 12, stand around the center ring on the court in an arbitrary arrangement. Show that some three consecutive players have the sum of their numbers at least 20.

The total of 1 to 12 is 12*13/2 = 78

If we group them randomly into 4 groups, each of 3 players, then,

Dividing 78 into 4 the mean is 19.5 so at least there is a group of 19*3 = 57 and the remaining one is 21.

There must be 3 consecutive players with sum >= 20.
