0/0 = meaningless
1/0 = infinity
0/1 = 0
e.g. 1
I am going to show you 2 =3 in the following proof:
2y = 3y
Dividing both sides by y
2y/y = 3y/y
2 = 3
You get such riduculus result because you have made a mistake of dividing by 0.
When you divide both sides by an unknown, you have to assume that it is not equal to 0
The correct way of doing this question is :
2y = 3y
3y - 2y =0
y = 0
Or
Assuming y is not equal to 0
Dividing both sides by y
2 = 3 Contradiction !
Therefore y = 0
(When you arrive at something contradictory at the end, it means your assumption is wrong)
e.g. 2
(y - 1) = 5(y - 1 )
Assuming (y - 1) is not equal to zero
Dividing both sides by (y - 1)
1 = 5 Contradiction !
Therefore y - 1 = 0
that is y = 1
The question can also be done in the following way:
(y - 1) = 5(y - 1 )
0 = 5 (y - 1) - ( y - 1)
4 (y - 1 ) = 0
y - 1 = 0
y = 1
