熊猫生长于中国中西部四川盆地周边的山区，是中國特有的野生動物，亦為國寶.大熊猫主要栖息于海拔1400米—3500米，落叶阔叶林，针阔混交林和亚高山针叶林带的山地竹林内。主要分布在中国的陕西南部、甘肃及四川等地。
因为竹子的能量低，为了尽可能的减少能量消耗，大熊猫将一天时间主要分配在觅食和休息上。吃饱了，喝足了，美美的睡上一觉，爬上高高的树杈，又安全又凉爽，也有“困不择床”的时候，草坪、雪地、岩石．．．．．．只要打个盹，又继续觅食。
熊猫有不惧严寒、从不冬眠的性格，因为它是第四纪冰川中走过来的勇士，哪怕气温下降到零下4℃-14℃，仍穿行于白雪皑皑的竹林中，选食可口的竹子，更不像黑熊等很多动物，躲藏于树洞或岩洞进行冬眠。它还不怕潮湿，终年在湿度80%以上的阴湿森林中度过，明代神医李时珍推崇垫睡熊猫皮可以避寒湿，祛邪气，可能缘于此。
