The number of hours John spends on studying is normally three times that of Simon. This week ,each of them spends 6 hours more on studying .As a result, John spends 12 hours more than Simon. How many hours does
(a)John normally spend on studying in a week?
(b)Simon normally spend on studying in a week?

let the time that John normally spend on studying in a week be 3a hours
let the time that Simon normally spend on studying in a week be a hours

(3a + 6) = 12 + (a + 6)
2a = 12
a = 6

so,

John normally spend on studying in a week = 3x6 = 18hours
Simon normally spend on studying in a week = 6hours

Let x be the hours that Simon normally spent:

(3x + 6) - (x + 6) = 12
2x = 12
x =6

Therefore, John normally spend 3 * 6 = 18 hours on studying
Simon normally spend 6 hours on studying.
