Industry of Hong Kong

The industry of Hong Kong starts thousand years ago. At that time, the industry is mainly agriculture, fishing and some mining.

In Qing dynasty, Hong Kong was also active in producing joss sticks. That is why Hong Kong is called, the port of Joss Sticks, when British took over.

After Second World War, a lot of textile manufacturers move from Shanghai. They started a lot of textile factory in Hong Kong. From 1960s, Hong Kong entered its golden period in manufacturing industry. Hong Kong produced plastic flowers, clothings, watches and toys. IN 1980s, since China opened its market, a lot of Hong Kong manufacturers moved their factory to Zhujiang delta. That was the declining of Hong Kong's manufacturing industry. Those manufacturers moved to China because the labour costs and land costs in China at that time were low. They can build very large factories and employed a lot of cheap labour.

However, the tertiary industry such as financial services, tourism etc., rose in 1990s.
