1. A real-estate firm has built a new rental unit of 60 apartments. It is know from past experience that if they charge a monthly rent of $150 per apartment, all the units will be occupied, but for each $3 increase in rent, one apartment unit is likely to remain vacant. What rent should be charged to generate the same $9000 total revenue as is obtained with a rent of $150 and at the same time to leave some vacant suites?

Let x be the rental charge and y be the no. of vacant suite.

(60-y) (x) = 9000 (1)
x - 150 = 3y (2)
From (2), x = 150 + 3y (3)
Sub (3) into (1), (60 - y) ( 150 + 3y) = 9000
9000 - 150y + 180y - 3y^2 = 9000
Hence, 30y = 3y^2
y = 10
x = 180
The rental charge is $ 180.

1. 10
2a.
C=5+2(6-p)
=17-2p
p=1 (dont suppose level of production can be zero), C=15
