What is internet?

The Internet is the worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
Contrary to some common usage, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not synonymous: the Internet is a collection of interconnected computer networks, linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, etc.; the Web is a collection of interconnected documents, linked by hyperlinks and URLs. The World Wide Web is accessible via the Internet, as are many other services including e-mail, file sharing, and others described below.

What is intranet?

An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. The same concepts and technologies of the Internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other Internet protocols are commonly used as well, especially FTP and e-mail. There is often an attempt to use Internet technologies to provide new interfaces with corporate 'legacy' data and information systems.

What are the differences betwwen Internet and Intranet?

Basically, the Intranet and Internet are two different information hubs. The Internet is what's known as the World Wide Web, a public Web site with information that is open to anyone. People or constituents on the "outside" turn to the Internet site to access information about an organization and its products or services; sometimes they're just surfing the 'net and accidentally come upon the site.
But Intranet content is accessible only to employees of a specific organization. The purpose of Intranet sites is to facilitate information flow within an organization. The employees already understand the organization's mission, structure, and terminology, so they don't need the kind of broader introduction to the organization the public might want.
Employees inside an organization use the Intranet site to obtain information pertinent to their workplace mission. For example, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employee may access CustomsNet-our Intranet site, at http://cnet-to obtain information about open season enrollments; benefits, pay, and leave policies; policy directives; and strategic plans.
