Yes, it does. The good kind (not bulky weight-lifter muscles) and it also improves your flexibility, which is something that many muscle-builders forget about. Check out a picture of Ian Thorpe - or any of the top swimmers, male or female, and you'll see lean and mean, well-muscled bodies that are toned all over, not just in a few selected spots.

I have been swimming 5 days a week, 2 hrs a day + Whey protein supplement everyday for awhile to pump up. In addition to that, I have been eating Wendy and BK's chicken nuggets constantly. Gained 15 lbs in 2 1/2 months - muscle only (mainly shoulder, chest and arm - also, I have no stomach) I was a very skinny guy, but my body looks good when I take off my shirt now.

I would more correctly say it will tone the muscles.

If you want bigger muscles, hitting the weights will build and grow muscle.

If you want the perfect body, then swim and lift weights.

in the sport of swimming,, you are using certain muscles only,, so just like in running, you would have to watch the workouts and limit how you would use them, but yes you would grow muscles in those areas only. That is why most people do swimming 2-3 times a week and do other activities on the other days

Yes, but more slim slender muscle, not bulk muscle.
