You need a router set up at home. Open port 3389 on the router/firewall for remote desktop. If your workstation is behind the router and get a local IP address from the DHCP of the router. You need to set something called port forwarding on the router to point any incoming traffic for port 3389 to the IP of your local computer. Then, from the public, you need to connect using your public IP address, which is given by your Internet service provider.

To set up this computer to use Remote Desktop
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Remote tab, select the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box.
Ensure that you have the proper permissions to connect to your computer remotely, and click OK. You must be an administrator or a member of the Remote Desktop Users group on your computer.

Notes
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to enable the Remote Desktop feature.
To open a Control Panel item, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.
To allow other users to connect to your computer
Open System in Control Panel.
Click the Remote tab.
In the Remote Desktop area, click Select Remote Users....
On the Remote Desktop Users dialog box, click Add....
On the Select Users dialog box, click Locations... to specify the search location.
Click Object Types... to specify the types of objects you want to search for.
In the Enter the object names to select (examples): box, type the names of the objects you want to search for.
Click Check Names.
When the name is located, click OK. The name now appears in the list of users on the Remote Desktop Users dialog box.
