Well you are not clear in what you mean by clean.
If you mean "clean" as with a hard drive that's never had data written on it at all, then you need some software to do that.
If you mean "clean" as in I simply want to be able to delete everything and start over and reinstall all my software, etc. then that is simple.
Assuming you are using any of the Windows XP OS versions, then this will re-format your hard drive.
Remember performing a reformat doesn't actually scrub the drive clean, but it identifies all the data on the drive to be eligible to be written over. Once the format is complete, none of the data can be accessed without special, expensive software.
Here is my method.
1. Put Windows XP disc in the CD drive. When it boots and asks you for a choice of what you want to do, simply click on exit.
2. Restart the PC with the XP disk in the drive. This will cause the PC to boot from the CD.
3. Once the CD is into the boot up cycle a "DOS" type screen will appear and you should have the choice to perform a Windows XP repair action, or to perform a new install. Select the new install. Follow the instructions. It will advise you that it will format the hard drive and you have to approve that action. Make sure you select the NTFS file formatting when it asks you to choose. Once it starts all you have to do for the most part is sit back and let the installation happen.
At the end of installation, there will be nothing accessable on your PC except Windows XP. You will need to reinstall any/all software/data/files that you want on the PC.
Also, I recommend you visit the
www.microsoft.com home page and select the Upgrade feature and download and install all the upgrades and security fixes that are available. You will probably have to perform the Microsoft upgrade function several times since some have to be installed separately form the others and they require reboot once installed.
Good luck
