Well, I go to a male because he was highly recommended. It was weird at first, but he became a friend and he's really nice and considerate. He delivered my 2 kids.

The logical answer would be "female". HOWEVER, it really depends on the individual person.

Why do I say this? Because of my mum's experience.

I was delivered by caesarian, and Mum had a female gynaecologist at that time. Mum always said that this gynaecologist was just terrible, inexperienced, and careless to an unthinkable extent; she even left Mum with a serious vaginal infection.

And then to make things worse, this female gynaecologist is a big gossip and she blabs to everyone about how my mum's pregnancy was "such a pain and so scary". We know this because one of Mum's friends just happened to be another one of this woman's patients, and heard her going on about "this Tsai-yin whom I couldn't wake up after her caesarian, blah blah blah..."

My mum had to undergo surgery recently to remove a polyp: she had a male gynaecologist this time, quite a famous and skilled one. Mum was paranoid about operations due to her last experience, but this male gynaecologist was skilled in both psychology and surgical technique... so everything went perfectly.

(Update)
I got Mum to see this question and she says that Endo's answer above is completely accurate.

A female...a male doctor has to study the same things as a female Dr....But...A female doctor experiences the same things we do and it is easier to explain to them what is wrong and not have them look at us in a strange way.

Every female gyn I've ever seen has been an uppity, condescending, unsympathetic witch with a huge chip on her shoulder. More importantly, each one has been worse than the last in diagnosing and compassionately treating painful gyn concerns, because "they didn't have that with their periods!" That's completely unacceptable. I've never had breast cancer, but I'm willing to bet a mastectomy hurts like hell, so why would a woman who's never had an ovarian cyst or Endometriosis assume they didn't hurt?! Anyway - male docs all the way. More sympathetic, compassionate, and inclined to believe and listen.

Female. I've had both and have found that females tend to be more gentle and considerate.

Female gynae definately, a male gynae is like an automechanic that never owned a car...think about it.
