No, I'll assume what I want, and if I'm wrong I'm wrong. It's not meant to be insulting. Like if I was in Europe and someone asked me if I was american when I'm Canadian, even though I don't care for the states I wouldn't be offended by the person. People make mistakes. It's not a big deal.
This happens to my dad all the time. Its pretty funny.
EXACTLY! Not to mention many Mexicans are blond, blue eyes, and white skin!!!!!
well just ignore them duh! you aint got to make a big deal out of it!
OK, practice this and listen to some native speakers to get the accent right:
(exasperated sigh) Ach! Du ist ein dumkopf! (slap head with palm; roll eyes) Mein Gott im himmel!"
{approximate translation: Geez! You are an idiot! My God in heaven!}
Then walk off briskly, shaking your head and muttering to yourself in German.
It would be even better if you could do the same in Mandarin Chinese, but unfortunately, I can't help you there. Good luck.
I had a learning experience from something exactly like this. I was in Japan, and I needed directions to a train station. I walked up to a woman and said VERY slowly with pauses in between each word -
"Doooooo Youuuuuuuu Knoooooowwwww Wheeeerrrrrreee Theeee Traaaaaiiiiiinnnnnn Sttaaaaatttttttiiiiiiiiooooooonnnnnnn Isssss?"
She replied in perfect English "Yes, it's just down the street. Turn right at the stop light and you can't miss it"
I was floored. I never felt so rude in my life.
Turns out she lived in the US for like 2 years and spent about the same amount of time in Europe.
When you see a person with fair skin blue eyes and blond hair, don't you assume he is white?even though there are fair skin mexicans ,puerto ricans, cubans etc etc
American Native here,
I have gotten so tired of peoples ignorance and assumptions that whenever I go out in public I wear a hat with NATIVE PRIDE on it, My Father in law gave it to me, its one of my most prized possesions.
Another gift that I received from a really good couple is a t-shirt hand printed by lulu, It has a big stop sign in the middle and written below is; Stop! do not insult me! I am NOT mexican. I also wear a feather in my hair whenever I go to the local Wal-mart, to prevent people from even beginning to think that I may be of spanish descent. I cant control peoples ignorance or intolerance but I can sure find a way to let them know that I am NOT! in any way shape or form A mexican. You can find a way if you try, Natives are creative, use some of your inborn "injunuity" and you can keep this from happening. But it is sad that we have to do things like this because of a huge population of instant criminals which have invaded our homeland.
sorry for the stereotype, but that is something that was created by spanish speaking people. society is not perfect and based their thinking on what they see and observe in their daily lives. in it is not right but it is reality right now.
i would be madder then hell if somebody called me a mexican. thats the worse insult you can tell somebody
I can relate. People shouldn't assume so much, I don't get too bent out of shape about it though. Hispanic people often will start speaking Spanish to me. I just look at them with a dumbfounded look on my face and then politely say that I do not speak Spanish. Usually they don't mean any harm by it and will then speak in English. Another concept is that people who aren't really around very many Hispanic people or Native people, might not be able to tell the difference. Me being Native can pretty much tell if somebody is Native and not Hispanic.. So I guess a lot does depend on how, and who you grew up around.
It,s a bigger misconception to people who think you are what you think they are. ignore those people cause they are pretend to be a smartass.
Likewise. My mother is French, and people assume I'm just born from white rednecks, I want reparation. And I want the French President to apologize to America for being a money hungry coward.
It depends on where you are (which city). If you are in a city where many Mexicans reside then yes some people will assume you are Hispanic ( if you are in Florida they would think you are Cuban). Its just human nature to categorize things to make our lives easier. Its rude, and probably shows stupidity, but such is life.
i don't know.Im 1/4 part cherokee and they always come up to me and ask me questions...good thing i know spanish.
if you look like a MEXICAN maybe you should die your hair blonde and wear some contacts (blue perhaps) oh wait... there are mexicans that look this way... ooops.
like someone from above said.. I GUESS YOU JUST HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT. or you can carry a sign that says im not a @#$%^ mexican... and have your *** kicked by mexican people ...lol.
參考: no but seriously... we all make mistakes and we have to deal with it.
No big deal, I am asked all of the time if I am Italian. I respond nicely and say that i am an American.
People should stop assuming...
It's happened to me once. I just shake it off an pretend it's funny. Except this one time, when a store clerk asked me if I was african...when I am not black in any context....I just looked at her and asked her if her if she was chinese. She said "no, why?" I said, "Oh, because your eyes are kind of small." Then walked out.
It was pretty funny. I'd do it again.
Oh!, you speak COPPERTONE!
Good point. There is a fight to keep our national common language English, and in areas they are fighting to make it Spanish.
When we lose our identity in that way, each of the two languages will limit themselves to where in the country they can live and work and the opportunites they have.
Change everything to Spanish in my community, and I would be lost and not belong in my own community. This is what we see by having 2 million people move out of Southern California so 2 million other people could move in. 2 million English speaking people just didn't decide to get up and go - they were forced out by the community standards that we'll see more of going down the direction we are now.
Depends on where you are. I have experienced that also. I am multiracial and I have all kinds of various racial assumptions made about me, to the point that I am used to it. (all u guilty people can stop anytime, tho) However I understand Spanish, I may even have a little Hispanic ancestry & so that is not much of a problem for me, however I found it interesting. After analyzing my situation & asking many people, the major consensus was that it really was more complimentary than anything meant detrimentally. In my case, most of the people speaking to me were Hispanic. Perhaps in your case, it's different.
In the end, it may all get down to that word assume and what they say that does. Ya know?
;D
lol ...that;s so funny , but it's not people's fault u look like a mexican so deal with it =)
Maybe off the topic but I hate when people call themselves something their really not. For example, an Asian-American who has never been to Asia. This goes for all races. We are all AMERICANS, we need to quit dividng ourselves like this.
I know how you feel. People have asked me if I am Latina. I am NOT!! I do, however, speak fluent Spanish. I learned it in college. My husband is Native American, true American Indian, not South American border jumper. (many Mexicans are trying to say they are Native American so they can try to live off of Native American legacy in hopes to justify their criminal actions) Anyway, this has happened to him several times and he becomes very upset. He even wears a shirt sometimes that says, "Don't insult me! I am not Mexican!" He finally had to start wearing a single feather in his hair. He is very insulted when someone mistakes him for Hispanic. There just aren't very many real Native Americans here, way too many Mexicans though.
thats what my mom did.
I think that people think Im mexican , when I am I dont speak spanish, but im mexican?
