I prefer the Maxtor One Touch II and One Touch III external drives. They have them up to 1 TB!! I have 2 300Gb ones that were very inexpensive and work great. I use them for Video Editing and their 7200Rpm speed ensures they are fast enough for this sort of thing.

Maxtor has models that work with either Firewire or USB 2.0 (and back compatible to USB 1.1 for use with an old pc.)

They are durable and have a cool metal casing which looks nice and they are very quiet.

If the 1TB ones are too expensive check out the 500GB or 300Gb models you can pick up cheaply.

You may buy an USB 2.0 external case. Depending on your hard drive using, you may buy a 2.5" (laptop harddisk) or 3.5" (desktop harddisk). You can refer following link for different types of harddisk cases. Some hdd case with TV output, mean you can view your video / picture on your TV. Other have built in card reader, called OTG case and you can copy your memory card data directly to the external drive even without connecting to your PC.
