Different strokes for differest folks. Japan is a very closed society. They strive to be racially pure. It is even very difficult for Koreans and/or chinese to spend a lot of time in Japan. I lived in Japan for two years and was treated with great respect and felt that I was accepted in most if not all situations. However, marriage between races is definately frowned upon. England is a much more open society without many of the social restrictions which Japan places on their citizens.

I think it's appalling that when such a closed-door policy is advocated in the US, or the UK, or anywhere else in the west, people start crying foul and accusing the authorities of racism and xenophobia...

But when the same thing happens in Japan, everyone gives a loud cheer for their government, which is probably more racist and bigoted than any in the western world.

Some Korean families who have lived in Japan for *generations* still aren't naturalised citizens!

As for the racial homogeneity thing, why don't we Chinese and Koreans launch a joint exercise to send as many illegal immigrants to Japan at once through our airlines and fake tourist visas. Our combined populations are large enough to overwhelm their immigrations officers.

Finally, before you start shouting about population density...
Taiwan and South Korea are both denser than Japan. It's only the large cities that are dense in Japan. In Toyama Prefecture (300 km northwest of Tokyo) the average size of a house is 1915 sq ft., which would be unthinkably huge anywhere else in dense East Asia.

England has pressure from the rest of Europe to be nice. Japan doesn't give a rat's rear end.

♡I have to agree with machiko, JAPAN DOES accept immigrants who DO meet the requirements. Japan isn't a big country, it would be impossible to accept each and every immigrant who applied, think about it. Japan is careful in that respect. I have lived in Japan almost 9 years with a Japanese hubby and was asked about becoming a Japanese citizen a few times, when I was at the immigration office, I'm American, so they do accept immigrants! Japan and England are completely different and each have their own criteria for accepting more or less immigrants.♡You can read more about it and get more info at these sites:

Because we have a left wing government that doesn't give a damn about the nation state. Let all those who seem to believe in uncontrolled immigration, put their money where their mouth is and take an immigrant into their own homes. Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming immigrants for trying to improve themselves. But ever heard of the saying "killing the goose that lays the golden egg". Some people think that our largesse can be unlimited.

I have no time for those who wish to avoid debating immigration by squealing " racist". How childish, how undergraduate. Please refer to Richelles' answer above. What the hell does she think Britain has been doing for the last five hundred years but keeping invaders out. Remember, we are living now, not in the past. All those people she refers to will be dead now. It was a different world then.

Japan can determine its own immigration policy because it does not have to abide by the ridiculous Human Rights Act, spawn of the equally ridiculous EU.

Well - you pretty much answer your own question - Do you think they can keep their economic power or not? and with your last statement frankly don't really care what happens to them in the future. There you go!

Japan will die anyway, their population is declining very fast and Japanese people can't change, they are an ignorant, closed-minded population that knows nothing about the outside world. They do accept immigrants, but fewer compared to the UK. Also Japanese people are unable to live with people who are not Japanese, they simply can't...

Immigration isn't a matter of Birth Problem. (not now)

Did you ever tryed to immigrate to England?
I'm from Austria and even being as a European, I should fight for my rights there othing is easy;
I've meet a lot of people trying to apply to immigration and it was difficult to get in.

Situations to Europeans trying to deslocate in Europe are worst in France and even worst (terrible) in Italy. Trust me, because I've worked in italy, France and UK.

European countries only take easy when it were a deep request for professional, then, they allow immigrations using other terms.

Everything is a matter of professionals, money and pension. Japan does not have this problem. They are able to manage their public accounts and also are able to provide graduated professionais to all areas, specially scientists. They does not have same european Lack.

With the collapse of the british empire britain had a dilemma Up till then everyone under british rule was british. When the various countries achieved independence thier citizens remained british When the migration from asia, africa and the west indies began Britain could'nt stop this influx of migrants. They were british Japan never had this problem as her only foreign possesion was korea and were koreans. In fact japan denies citizenship to native born koreans(koreans born in japan)
2006-06-22 8:25 am
because they are already overcrowded!

Japan does accept immigrants, you probably just didn't meet their requirements, which are more stringent than some places. Of course, they aren't going to accept as many as England, it is a completely different culture and they have to make do with a small amount of space. They aren't going to accept tons of people, that would be incredibly stupid.

"Foreigners, who have resided in Japan for at least five consecutive years (less if married to a Japanese national) and fulfill a range of other vaguely defined conditions, can apply for Japanese citizenship. Japan does not allow multiple citizenship, which means that new citizens need to renounce their previous citizenship(s). "
I'd also like to add you must have a certain amount of money with which to support yourself and a four year degree.

Because Japan has been watching what's going on in England and the U.S. and says no way Jose.....

Japan has the lowest crime rate in the world. They want to keep it that way.
2006-06-22 8:01 am
All full up-no more room. We need to care for what we have. Smart people.
2006-06-22 8:00 am
Because in England we are all stupid and are so blind that we can not see the final outcome ( civil war )
2006-06-22 8:00 am
Because england is an open door to anyone who has half a sob story and "lost" their passport. next time you whant a free house, food vouchers and medical just go down to the local dock yard sneak into a crete and put on a doggy voice and say you'll be killed if you return home. Works every time!!!!
2006-06-22 7:53 am
Because they are two different countries
2006-06-22 7:52 am
I don't know why but just look at the result of the policy.
Compare Japans economy with ours. It speaks for itself.
2006-06-22 8:40 am
Simply because the Japanese wisely choose to not do so... look at the standard of living in England as compared to that of Japan. Need any more be said of the issue?
2006-06-22 8:22 am
The reason Japan has a low birth rate is, because its already the most population country in the world. Couples are only allowed to have one child, and if they have anymore they are taxed heavily.

England needs to stop taking all these bloody immigrants. Most of them haven't got a penny too their name, and expect the country to look after them.
2006-06-22 7:59 am
My grandfather always said "clever people those Japanese" but I think it's probably do to the size of Japan, Not much room there to expand, they had to build an Island for the airport. they just can't handle the influx of immigration or new births.
