Germs generally grow in colonies wherever they find a food source. Although they travel very slowly when attached to something, they often get help-such as mold streaking on a shower curtain. Most of their apparent movement is actually part of the original colony that has partially washed down the curtain. They also can spread to new sites through the air, and some types have spores that grow into germs after landing on a food source. You can see how hard it would be to lure them back to the location of an original colony.
