There is an opinion that Maneki Neko
became popular in the last part of Edo period around 1800 when Japan
was still ruled by the Samurai (Japanese warrier) classes. But we can't
confirm the existence of Maneki Neko in
the documents in those days. When the ruling of the Samurai classes
ended and Japan was becoming modern as Meiji period around 1870, Maneki Neko began to appear in the documents one after another.

This is the scene of making clay figures in Fushimi, southern part of
Kyoto. As you can see in the enlargement, cat figures are produced but
they are not making inviting gesture.

This is a drawing of toys in 1842. Among some other good luck articles,
figures which look like cat are also drawn. But we can't recognize them
as Maneki Neko.

A.D.1845This
is an ukiyoe-print (Japanese traditional woodblock print) by Kuniyoshi
Utagawa portraying a woman who is painting a cat figure carrying a baby
on her back. You can see the cat figure is not Maneki Neko either. This
old-fashioned cat figure is known as Marujimeneko. Though Marujimeneko
was popular as lucky cat previous to Maneki Neko in the old days, we
seldom see it at present Japan.

A.D.1851
Kuniyoshi Kitagawa is the ukiyoe-print artist who was active in the
last part of Edo period. He is also known as a great lover of cats, and
produced many works portraying cats. The picture is also his work
portraying a cat figure made of paper. But there is no work portraying
Maneki Neko left today.

Around  A.D.1860
This is a drawing of toys around 1860. Though some good luck articles
are drawn including a sitting cat figure, we cant see Maneki Neko in
it.

A.D.1864This
is Marujimeneko drawn in an illustrated book. There is an opinion that
Marujimeneko is the origin of Maneki Neko. But Marujimeneko which is
not making an inviting gesture is apparently different from Maneki
Neko.

This is the scene that two women are coloring clay figures. The cat figure in silhouette also looks like Marujimeneko.

Around A.D.1870This
is a sketch of Maneki Neko called Hattatsuneko. The personified figure
wearing kimono (Japanese traditional clothes) is a characteristic of
this Maneki Neko. Hattatsuneko is distributed in Sumiyoshi-taisha
(famous traditional shrine in Osaka) once a month, and it is locally
believed that your wish will be fulfilled when you collect 48
Hattatsuneko taking 4 years. There is a record that Hattatsuneko
existed in the 1870's.
The name of Maneki Neko also appears in newspaper article published in
September, 1876. These are the oldest Maneki Neko we can confirm its
existence in the documents, and there is no doubt Maneki Neko was
invented by the 1870's.

A.D.1885
This is the scene of making clay figures. Though the picture is
unclear, it is certainly Maneki Neko. This is the oldest Maneki Neko
visibly confirmed.

Around A.D.1890

At present time, there are many kinds of Maneki Neko which function as piggy banks, and its origin dates back to the 1890's.

A.D.1902This
is a part of woodblock print which introduces Japanese local toys. We
can know Maneki Neko is produced in many areas by this time. The
biggest lying cat in it is Marujimeneko. Being different from original
ones in the old days, this Marujimeneko is making an inviting gesture
being affected by Maneki Neko.
