people weigh up the pros and cons, they do not necessarily have the means to move anywhere else anyway.
its all about subconsciously determing the probabilities. we quite happily leave ourt houses everyday despite that fact that there are numerous dangers that could kill us, but we reason from our own understanding and experience that the chances are slim.
the chances of these extreme natural disasters proving fatal to a particular individual are also slim and so they do not feel as threatened as we may think they should.
how many times do we get the headline: "Everything is fine in Indonesia today, no earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis", i think the answer is never and yet this is 99% of the time they live there.

i live in southeast asia...specifically the philippines...we do live in a very naturally active place but hey it doesn't mean we cant carry on living a happy life...it doesn't really matter where destiny puts you as long as you are happy and contented and you are surrounded by people you love...you kinda forget you need to dodge a little lava flow once in a while (read: not literal)... it's now where you live but how you live that is more important...how about you hows you life there?

It is obviously un-wise to live there, but they are helpless.
Who wants to live under danger? We even try to get rid of any silly creatures (wall lizard, etc.) from our home?
Most of the South Asian countries are economically weak, so the majority of population is poor, they cannot afford the luxury to move out of danger.
There are so many places, which are prone to volcanic activities, earth quake. But still human civilisation grew there and take the example of Japan, it is very prone to earthquakes. Human, by nature, try to combat the odds and adapt to the danger.

I live in the Philippines and has survived the earthquake in 1990. I still live here. If you are suggesting that it is not wise to live here, can you provide a place where we can move and still make a living? your place perhaps?

About as wise to live there as it is to live in hurricane prone areas like the Gulf Coast of the United States, the earthquake regions of California or anywhere near Mount St. Helens. If you choose to live there, fine by me but don't call whining for aid because you live in a disater prone area and was struck by a disaster.
