Let X denote the number of votes received by the losing candidate.
Therefore the winning candidate received X + 220 votes.
The total number of votes is therefore denoted by

X + (X+220)

Since the total number of votes is equal to 810,

X + (X+220)=810
therefore 2x+220=810
2x=810-220
2x=590
x=295
The votes received by the losing candidate is equal to 295 and those received by the winning candidate are X+220, which is equal to 515

(a)x+y=810
(b)x-y=220

From (b), x-y=220, x=220+y, sub in (a)
x+y=810
220+y+y=810
2y+220=810
2y=810-220
2y=590
y=295

Put y=295 in (b)
x-y=220
x-295=220
x=515

The no of votes sequired by winning candidate=515
The no of votes sequired by losing candidate= 295
how to solve:
Let X be the no of votes sequired by losing candidate
Then 2X +220=810
So X=295

625 for the winner 185 for the other.
810 / 2 = 405

405 + 220 = 625
810 - 625 = 185
625 + 185 = 810
2006-05-08 7:14 pm
185 and 625
2006-05-08 7:14 pm
590,810
2006-05-08 7:14 pm
515 AND 295
2006-05-08 7:13 pm
515 & 295

810 - 220 = 590

590/2 = 295

295 + 220 =515
