I hear alot of talk about people passing or failing classes in college. A,B,C is considered passing and an F would denote failing a class, where does a 'D' put you?

D is passing if the class is a generic class not associated with your major, if you were majoring in history and got a D in history that would be failing. (or at least that's how it worked in my school)

First, your parents will know so approach them don't let them just discover it. Approach them with a plan about how you will overcome this. Do you plan to retake the course and improve the grade? If so let them know this. Mom, Dad although I studied and attended extra tutoring courses I received a D in ____, but I plan to retake this course to have a better understanding and continue to pursue investment banking. OR Mom, Dad although I studied and attended extra tutoring courses I received a D in ____, this has made me reevaluate why I wanted to study investment banking. For now this is my declared major, but I'm also considering ____. OR Whatever fits your situation. A D is not an end all. Remember your GPA is an average. A few A's will offset this one D. Most employers will not consider your GPA, but the recommendations of your professors. Your character and knowledge are more important than how well you take a test or present in-front of a classroom. Can you translate the "theory" of a college class course into practical application. This does not define you. You'll be fine. This is a learning experience. Treat it as such.

Getting a C hurts your GPA a D just plain kills it. It's a 1 on the 4 scale so unless you get As and Bs in everything else you'll be below a 3.0 average and that's not good especially if you are planning on grad school like med, law and others.

it depends on major. some majors feel that an F is failing while other majors such as nursing feel that anything below a 75 is failing. So a D can be anything.

D means you need to work hard, spend more time to study. D is not a good sign in that class.
