I have a name for a fictional character I want to use in a novel. How do I go about copyrighting the name?

i am not sure if you can only copyright the character name for a novel. But I believe the official site of copyright department can help. You can send a request and get a official answer.

You can't copyright a name.

If a name gets sufficiently associated with a source, it can become a trademark. (For example, there was a case in the 40's or so that ruled "coke" was a trademark created by consumers through usage, even though the Coca Cola Company hadn't used that term itself for the beverage.)

Right now, you can protect the work that the character appears in, but you can't protect the individual character's name.
