Do plants need sleep, or rest?

Do plants need to sleep at night or anything? I ran out of window sill for my tomato plants to be on, and I was going to use a fluorescent lamp and put the rest of them on a table with it going for a source of light. If I left the light going 24/7 would they grow more? Or, do they need a few hours break with no light? I'll be able to plant them outside in another 2-3 weeks either way, but I was wondering.

Good question. Do plants need sleep? No. Do they need rest? That's a tricky question. BUT, I can tell you from research/education that plants grow better with a dark period. At least 8 hours would be good. Also, as another poster said, fluorescent lighting will cause the plants to be leggier. You can "help" counter this by providing incandescent (regular ol' lightbulbs) as well. This will help to balance the spectrum a bit. One good tip on tomatoes....don't plant them out until the overnights are warm... probably when it doesn't get below 60oF ...it won't do you any good unless you protect them with walls o' water or something like that. Cool temps slow tomato plant growth. A plant planted later will often surpass one planted earlier if chilly temperatures are going on.

Good luck!

Yes, they do...Well you might call it sleep but most plants need a time of darkness. The amount of sun light you give them will determine what sex the plant is. Longer than 12 hours of light will yield female plants while less the 12 hours will give you mostly male plants.

Plants need light and a period of dark as well , as is provided for in nature.During the day , the plant uses light to photosynthesise (produce food). At night , by way of a chemical balance of sorts , the plant respires , discharging the waste produced during photosynthesis.Your plants will need a break , with no light. The fluorescent lamp would be okay to start the plants .

All plants need a period of no light just as a person needs to sleep. In plants it does not work like sleep however.Tomatoes are an annual by terminology they reproduce by seeds even though you can take a cutting. An annual is a plant that grows during the season and then dies at the end of season or life cycle. Your tomatoes will be fine under the light, however they will be more leggy under the light than the window sill. Just remember to slowly introduce then to the outside when you plan to plant them outdoors. That means put them in a sunny position where you plan to grow them outside for a limited time until they have a chance to adjust to the new location

I would say leave the light on for them during the day and shut it off at night just like it is being outside. They will be fine.
