A group of visionary French football administrators, led in the 1920s by the innovative Jules Rimet, are credited with the original idea of bringing the world's strongest national football teams together to compete for the title of World Champions. The original gold trophy bore Jules Rimet's name and was contested three times in the 1930s, before the Second World War put a 12-year stop to the competition.
At the first World Cup Championship in 1930, there were 13 participating teams: Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, France, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, United States, Uruguay, and Yugoslavia.....
The FIFA World Cup (often called the Football World Cup, Soccer World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most important competition in international football, and the world's most representative team sport event. Organised by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's governing body, the World Cup is contested by the men's national football teams of FIFA member nations. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II), however, it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds.
The final tournament phase (often called the "Finals") involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation, with these games making it the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, only seven nations have ever won the World Cup Finals. Brazil is the current holder, as well as the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times, while Germany and Italy follow with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals will be held in Germany between June 9 and July 9, 2006.
Jules Rimet had a vision for the world cup. So in 1930 the tournament was born and due to political bullshit most of the european teams did not enter. Their were only 13 teams. The french captain Alex Villaplane was shot dead by the french resistance. The final was between Uruuay and Argentina they even argued what ball to use in the final. So in the first half they used a Argentian ball then a uruguay one in the second.

The Football World Cup (officially FIFA World Cup) is the most important international football (soccer) competition. It is organised by the sport's governing body FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), with the finals tournament being the worlds most widely viewed sporting event.
The finals tournament is held every four years, but the World Cup qualification competition takes place over the preceding two years. Over 160 national teams compete in regional qualifying rounds for a place in the finals. The finals tournament currently has 32 teams playing over a 4-week period.
Jules Rimet, FIFA president in 1921, organised the first World Cup tournament and it took place in Uruguay in 1930. Selected nations were invited to send a team but with Uruguay as the venue for the competition meant a long and costly trip across the Atlantic for European sides and up until two months before the start of the competition no team from that continent had promised to send a team. Eventually teams representing Belgium, Romania, France and Yugoslavia to took part. eventually 13 teams entered and the home team of Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 in front of crowd of 93,000 in Montevideo to become the first winners of the World Cup. The World Cup trophy (Coupe du Monde) was renamed the Jules Rimet trophy in 1946.
Brazil won the tournament for the third time in 1970 and they were allowed to keep the original trophy with a new trophy being designed. The current trophy will be retired when the name plaque has been entirely filled but this will not be until 2038.
The most successful World Cup team is Brazil having won the tournament five times in and finished as runners-up twice. Brazil is also the only nation to have participated in every World Cup to date. Germany (as West Germany) have won three times and been runners up four times runners-up, whilst Italy have also won three trophies and two-time runners-up. Both Argentina and Uruguay have won the World Cup twice
In 1930,which played in Uruguay.
The first ever World Cup Final was played at the Centenario Stadium, Montevideo, on July 30th. A seemingly innocuous controversy overshadowed the build-up to the match as the teams disagreed on who should provide the match ball, forcing FIFA to intervene and decree that the Argentine team would provide the ball for the first half and the Uruguayans would provide their own for the second. The game ended 4-2 to Uruguay (who had trailed 2-1 at half time) who added the title World Cup Winners to the already prestigious mantle of Olympic Champions, as Jules Rimet presented the World Cup Trophy, which was later to be named after the man himself. Only one player from that final, Francisco Varallo (who played as a striker for Argentina), is still alive today.
The first World Cup was the only one without qualification; teams were invited. Due to the long and costly trip across the Atlantic, very few European teams chose to participate; two months before the tournament started, no team from that continent had officially entered.
FIFA's president, Jules Rimet, intervened, along with the Uruguayan government, which promised to pay the travel expenses of any travelling European team. Eventually four teams made the three-week sea trip: Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia.
The thirteen teams were drawn into four groups, with all the games taking place in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.
previously olympics were the premier soccer event but jules rimet came out with this idea to have a soccer only event the hosts were uruguay because they were the 1928 olympic champions and were celebrating their centenary celebrations in 1930 italy boycotted the event in protest 13 teams participated uruguay borne out all the transportation costs of the european nations
