Unlike mentioned before, holders do not automatically qualify, anymore that is. This is the first world cup in which the defending champ had to qualify to get in. Brazil is the champ, but for the first time in World Cup history, as the champ, they still had to go through qualifying, where they finished first in South America. Hosts still automatically qualify. But for the first time as well since there have been champions, the defending champ will not open the tournament with their match. Germany as the host, will open the tournament, while Brazil, the defending champ will play only in the third day of matches.
