Treat the cause. For older injuries, consider DVT, vascular occlusion or infection and treat appropriately.

If no treatable causes are identified, elevation, compression and cooling with ice for 15-20 minutes (not directly on the skin) 3-5 times per day will reduce inflammatory swelling due to injury.

For wounds that are non-open (no bleeding)the mnemonic ICE would fit in for immediate treatment-- standing for ice, compression and elevation (and in the correct order as well). Ice can promote vasoconstriction so that edema is relieved because less blood reaches the site of injury, so that less tissue fluid is formed. It is followed by compression on the edematous area so to promote tissue fluid returning into the bloodstream or the lymph and also to minimize further swelling. Lastly elevation of the limb is recommended. This can aid the return of the blood through the veins back into the heart, improving the circulation, so that extracellular fluid can drain away more easily.

In the long run, the site of injury should be well-protected so to allow a better recovery and prevent further injuries.

simply ask your doctor for advice. i would suggest restricting your fluid intake which may cause the swelling to decrease some, and becareful how often and how long you elevate the limb. you really don't want to put a strain on your kidneys.

elevate the limb above the heart.
