There really isn't that much difference. It depends on the DVD writer that you have, and the media that is cheaper. Many drives now support both DVD+R and DVD-R formats.
I've heard that DVD-R is _slightly_ more compatible with set-top DVD players, something like 99.6% versus 99.1% for DVD+R. Either way, I you probably won't know the difference.
In terms of brands, generic ones (kHypermedia, etc) may give you a lot of failed burns. I personally recommend going with name brands for a few cents more each. My favorites are Verbatim, Imation and Sony, with IBM, Maxell and Memorex being second-tier.
