what is cold turkey?

i think its when someone tries to quit smoking just straight out, like wakes up one morning and says i quit and stops smoking forever

the phrase refers to stopping a habit--usually a bad one--with no help from any medicine, substitutes, or weaning. Just stopping cold...turkey!
