Tips/suggestions for a youngster who wants to become a journalist.?

My nephew is 14 years old and would like to become a journalist (probably specialising in sports writing, eventually). He has made his exam choices bearing this in mind. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help him achieve this ambition?
